Paul’s artistic life began from an early age, where it was apparent he had a natural  ability. He pursued this and went to London where he studied at the old Hornsey School of Art and continued with a 20 year career in Design and Advertisng.

“For me it was the introduction of computers that made me pick up my paint brush again. It seemed as though all the skill had gone out of the job, from the days of producing marker visuals. So, it was a case of wanting to get more creative again and get my hands mucky”

Paul regularly attends life classes, whether it be drawing or painting. In fact the majority of his portraits are produced from within these classes. “You have to work very quickly to try and get some kind of likeness”

“I must have done hundreds of these classes, but it’s been great. You can appreciate form and anatomy far more by drawing/painting from life. It gives my work a solidness and understanding of the human form.”

Pauls main influences are the painters like John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Lucian Freud, Renoir and the french impressionists

More recently, Paul has discovered a love for painting cityscapes and in particular, paintings of Manchester where he worked for 20 years. I love painting the more iconic Victorian buildings. They are just so interesting. “I try and convey some of the grittiness and character of the city”

In closing, I have really enjoyed my return to painting. I have resisted the temptation of trying to sell my work. I just wanted to learn some of the basics first. (something lacking in many artists)

I am fortunate to have had some amazing individual tuition but for me now, it’s time to start selling and producing some good work.
